The course of 2017 Moves In! Bike racks are all occupied. Lines are a small bit longer again to obtain food. Books are being bought. Tools are put away and summer construction has dwindled down (well, the majority of it). Automobiles full of boxes of clothing and school supplies are increasingly being directed around campus to domestic halls. Going carts, student ID cards, and last second trips to Target; folks, its officially Move-In time.
As I ended up being walking the campus to take some pictures, I became overwhelmed by the power of the campus. Often I forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future worldwide leaders. We found myself just taking it all in while smiling at students and parents I have never met before. ( It might were a little weird, but hey, I became caught in a minute). Suddenly, I wished to travel back in its history, get back once again to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday early morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as these were entering their dorms for the first time. Subsequently, I sensed an amount that is great of and a bit of hesitation from moms and dads as they struggled to let their kids go. It is obvious that this moment is a milestone in most of their lives. Students look ahead to their next four years at USC and wonder at every one of the opportunities it could bring, while parents feel a feeling of success because they were somewhat accountable to get their kids to college. With all of these thoughts swirling on campus, I’m able to understand why there have been therefore many hugs going around.
throughout the convocation that is welcome, speakers endured in front side associated with the incoming class of 2017 and provided advice on how to make the most of their time here at USC. I would like to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife College, said during her message: Be present. It’s not as easy in your own life as it sounds but you will be a better human being the sooner you can practice it. To the new incoming freshmen at USC and present high school students; I challenge you to be present. Be present in your classes. Be there in your conversations. Be present as you do your research. Be present whenever you’re meeting new people. Be present when you write your personal statements. Be present when you study for your AP/IB tests. Be present when you take the tests. Show up when you ask her/him away. Be contained in conflict. Be contained in brand new challenges. Be contained in all of your new experiences and activities. Take it all in. Be current!

Hey Parents! Listen Up!

Parents play a crucial role in the entire college procedure. Usually times, moms and dads help subsidize some, if not all, of going to an university or college, and they are always there to ask those specific ‘parent’ questions that you as students can’t be bothered with (actually mom, did you need to inquire of the trip guide whenever the past meningitis outbreak ended up being?)

Nonetheless, there are circumstances where parents must have a seat that is back allow their sons and daughters to ask the difficult concerns. Right Here, we now have a compiled an inventory of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting during the college search and application process:

Do assist your son or daughter know very well what they are searching for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. Finding a good fit for your certain wants and needs is more important than the cachet of the name.

do not gather most of the information for them! Enable them to get hold of admission counselors and discover the information that is relevant themselves. After all, they’ll be in college somewhere soon enough, which is important that they learn to navigate the procedure themselves.

Do encourage your sons and daughters to visit college campuses, and include them on those tours! The way that is best to become familiar with an university is to result in the visit to campus.

Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus tours, interviews, receptions, etc. Let them do so! This shows us that they are mature and independent.

Do remind your sons and daughters that not receiving in to their very first option school may seem such as the end associated with the globe at that minute, but that things exercise and as they work hard that they will be successful wherever they go as long. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains at the top of these list even after enrolling someplace else.

Don’t fill their applications out for them! We can tell plus it reflects poorly on the applicant. We realize that these are teenagers applying and expect their applications to mention their true sound and style.

So the moral is: find a balance. Realize that your child is about to attempt a life-changing journey and that beginning to take ownership of the college application procedure is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured if they involve where to send the care package that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ questions, even.
