
The full time had come. My bachelor’s level ended up being newly in hand, and I also decided to accept the first job I had been offered ( it was the Great Recession and driving a car of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working with senior high school seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to be always a great fit for me! I learned many things working at a highschool (are you aware there is a software that calculates the likelihood you will get a snowfall day?!), and each fall was a concept in exactly how difficult it really is to be a 12th grader.
Senior is tough year! You are in your most difficult classes to date, you’re taking on increasingly more duties, you’re hitting a milestone nearly every week…and then we ask you to college. 12th grade may never be simple, you can certainly make it less hard. Though each pupil’s college process is unique, you can find a handful of behaviors/mind sets that I have observed cause stress that is unnecessary and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Appocalypse that is common by some after all me personally), but these are typically all avoidable knowing how to recognize the signs!
Focusing too much on that which you can’t change.
Do you keep worrying all about that C you got in freshman English? Are you regretting your decision to quit the track team? Many students invest their fall that is senior focusing the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. In place of stressing about things you can’t change, spend your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior year grades, and putting together the application that is best you can. Think upward and onward!
Ignoring the advice of your elders.
Would you nod when your counselor speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your own memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it is your task? I am shocked…really, I am. Keep in brain that, with it,’ the adults in your life can offer important insight into your application process (and even help you identify your strengths so you can better highlight them) while they might not always be ‘hip and. Ignoring their advice can cut you removed from some pretty valuable information, so have you thought to take all of the help you are able to get?
Dropping in love.
No, I’m not discussing the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for a long time ( you should certainly just inform them currently)! I am speaing frankly about the head-over-heels students that are feeling get for one college on their list. There’s a difference between having a very first choice and being so fixated on a school that you can’t even fathom going somewhere else. It’s called the school process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it will end! You are admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and find a number of institutions you would love to attend though I sincerely hope.
Avoidance.
Are you leaving things to the minute that is last? Have you been putting off looking up what supplementary essays you need to write? Have you been reading this post on 14th january? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell your self, no one works best under stress (trust me…this is a ‘do as I say, much less I do’ situation). Multiple drafts would be the key to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the actual only real defense against a sloppy application. You’ve got enough on your own dish year that is senior. If you don’t yet have a plan for how you are going to complete every one of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! You don’t desire to rush (or even worse, forget something) in this procedure. So stop scanning this weblog and get to work—I know you can do it!
Student Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to start working with our weblog. While coming up with subject ideas, I looked at common questions we get from prospective pupils and another of my favorites is always: what’s it like to be considered a learning pupil at USC? And even though I’m an alumna of the college and had personal experiences… that is great really want you to listen to from current pupils with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about all the things that are cool need certainly to say (many of you get an adequate amount of that), I’ll find current students to inform you about their experiences. For our first installment, we now have Edwin Saucedo, the pupil Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government. He’s originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this coming May 2017. Some tips about what he had to say:
Four years ago, I found myself where many of you may be right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with looking for the college that is perfect. It was hard sufficient attempting to navigate college applications when neither of my parents spoke English or had pursued higher education themselves. The stress of finding the place that is best to pay the following four years was extremely overwhelming.
Than I could have ever expected as I think back at my college application process the first thing I have to say is, everything worked out better. When I applied to college we never ever thought I would become at USC. I expanded up in South Gate, CA where only 6% of this population that is total a college degree. It’s obvious, We never imagined i’d find myself being the pupil Body President my year that is senior right here. The four years in between my senior year of high school and senior year of university have brought on a wide range of lessons, experiences, and friendships we never expected. However, the combination of all of the these life that is unexpected has indeed led me to where I am today.
Being pupil Body President at one of the most prestigious universities within the nation can be an job that is intimidating. It isn’t easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who result from over 100 different countries, are of all different races, and have extremely diverse backgrounds that are economic. However, its also a very rewarding opportunity. Every time we get to go into our student government office and get myself: how can I make this college a better place for all pupils? That is our goal in student government, to create the greatest undergraduate experience, which is why I made the decision to run for this position spring that is last.
I invest at the least twenty hours each week listening to students’ experiences, asking them how I could be of any service, and connecting them towards the channels that are proper this campus. On the other side of things, we advocate on the behalf to administration in efforts to produce better campus policies, address any issues, and plan money for hard times of our campus. My favorite part however is taking the details we learned from both students and administrators and picking out unique solutions to addressing these issues.
In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and thinkers that are creative. We challenge each other’s ideas and gives suggestions on improvements. During the end of the day, we come up with proposals how to address each and every issue. It is through these creative proposals that we have been able to get our students uber that is free from 7pm to 2 am and have actually gotten a weekly farmers market on campus. But our work does not end there. Over the span of the year our student government sets on over 300 events that are free our pupils. These consist of intimate discussions about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or musicians like Diplo for all of our students to enjoy.
We shape the experience that is undergraduate give students https://shmoop.pro/ the ability to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is really what college is focused on. Regardless of whether you go to USC or choose elsewhere as your brand-new home, dare to challenge your self and start to become challenged by others. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my own, they are not wrong or right but different, and that is okay.
As you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry just as much about where you’ll wind up, but instead what you will do as soon as you get there. University is a right time and energy to explore and find your passion. I discovered my passion within student government and working towards enhancing USC for present and students that are future. For you, that passion may lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your last months of high school and get ready to embark in a journey that is new of unique and exciting experiences.
